Journalist Magomedov disappointed with court ruling on his claim against law enforcers

Magomed Magomedov, a deputy editor-in-chief of the "Chernovik" (Draft) outlet, has stated that he intends to appeal against the ruling of the Supreme Court (SC) of Dagestan, which has only partially recognized law enforcers' actions during his solo picket as illegal.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the Dagestani SC had partially satisfied Magomedov's lawsuit, finding the law enforcers' demand to the journalist to follow them to the police station and his subsequent detention there as illegal. However, the SC found no violations in the disruption of his solo picket held in support of Abdulmumin Gadjiev.

On January 16, 2023, law enforcers detained Magomed Magomedov and Idris Yusupov*, a journalist, who intended to hold solo pickets in defence of their colleague, Abdulmumin Gadjiev. The picketers were taken to the Makhachkala police station under the pretext that the police had received a message about the intended mass unrests. A few hours later, the journalists were released. On April 17, Magomedov challenged the legality of the police actions in his lawsuit.

"I'm not entirely satisfied with the SC's ruling, and we'll appeal against it, as we see no logic in it and the achievement of legality and justice," Magomed Magomedov has stated.

He has explained that he did not demand any compensation in court. "We also claimed no specific punishment for the policemen. It was important for us to establish the illegality of policemen' actions and the fact that they had disrupted a legitimate solo picket," Mr Magomedov has added.
