Defence calls Russian MoJ’s arguments in Oleg Orlov’s* lawsuit unconvincing

The arguments of the Russian Ministry of Justice, presented at the today’s court hearing considering the claim filed by Oleg Orlov* to challenge his status of a foreign agent, contain no specific reasoning and are unconvincing, so, the decision to refuse to exclude the human rights defender from the register of foreign agents will be challenged, an advocate has announced.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on February 2, the Russian Ministry of Justice (MoJ) included Oleg Orlov*, the co-chair of the “Memorial” Centre for Human Rights Defence*, in the register of foreign agents. The MoJ noted that Oleg Orlov* opposed the actions of the Russian troops in Ukraine. The Zamoskvoretsky District Court of Moscow left Oleg Orlov*on the register of foreign agents.

“The reasoning of the Ministry of Justice can be applied to any citizen of Russia ... The law on foreign agents hangs over all of us like the sword of Damocles and is selectively used against unwanted persons,” noted lawyer Alexandra Baeva.

The lawyer has noted there are certain complaints about violations of rights of Oleg Orlov*.

Tatiana Kasatkina, a spouse of Oleg Orlov*, says that being under arrest, her husband feels support reading letters from his family members and friends.
