Court agrees to question expert on case of human rights defender Igor Nagavkin

The district court has granted the request lodged by Igor Nagavkin, a Volgograd human rights defender, to interrogate the author of the examination of his statements, which became the basis for the criminal case against him on disorganization of the work of the SIZO (pre-trial prison).

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the Leninsky District Court of the Volgograd Region is hearing the case of Igor Nagavkin, accused of disorganizing the work of the SIZO. He declared a provocation to place him into a cell with "paedophiles," which caused a conflict with the SIZO staff. On February 19, 2024, Nagavkin stated that he had been illegally kept in a solitary cell for more than 40 days.

Three SIZO employees had accused Nagavkin of threatening them on May 15, 2023, while they forced him into a cell with suspects in crimes against sexual integrity.

Nagavkin has filed a petition to re-summon the linguist expert to the court. "I have stated more than once in court that she had incorrectly interpreted the content of my appeals to the SIZO staff during the incident. She (the expert) thought up something in her examination that did not exist at all," he has explained.

Nagavkin said that he had also filed lawsuits regarding the "disgusting custody conditions at the SIZO."

On April 23, the court released Nagavkin from further punishment due to the expiration of the statute of limitations. On the same day he left the SIZO and went home. He said he would seek full rehabilitation.
