Makhachkala resident fears for his safety after arrest

Mukhammed Djambulatov, a resident of Dagestan, who was arrested after laying flowers at the memorial to Alexei Navalny, intends to appeal against his arrest, but fears further persecution after law enforcers' threats.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that after his arrest, law enforcers have beaten up Mukhammed Djambulatov, who laid flowers at the spontaneous memorial to Alexei Navalny, and forced him to refuse a medical examination, which resulted in his arrest for 11 days.

The police's report states that Djambulatov "behaved suspiciously, therefore a medical examination seemed necessary." A protocol was drawn up against him under the article on the consumption of narcotic drugs or psychotropic substances.

Djambulatov then noted that he was ready to undergo a medical examination, but due to law enforcers' threats, he was unable to do so.

A complaint is being prepared against the arrest and law enforcers' actions, Natella Agaeva, an advocate, has stated. According to her story, Djambulatov was in the Dagestan law enforcers' prophylactic register. "He has already been detained for taking part in a political rally in Derbent," the advocate has added.

A lawyer from the "Memorial" Centre for Human Rights Defence* is sure that there were violations of the law in the actions of the law enforcers who had detained Djambulatov.

*As reported on the website of the Ministry of Justice (MoJ), the reason for including on March 1, 2024, the unregistered "Memorial" Centre for Human Rights Defence (CHRD) into the roster of foreign agents was the spread of "inaccurate information aimed at creating a negative image of the Russian Federation, as well as the Russian Armed Forces."
