In Krasnodar, activists pay tribute to Alexei Navalny* by laying flowers

In Krasnodar, supporters of Alexei Navalny* laid flowers in memory of him at the memorial to the victims of fascism.

The Federal Penitentiary Service (known as FSIN) Department for the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug reported that convict Alexei Navalny died in a penal colony after his condition sharply worsened. The conditions of detention in the penal colony led to the death of Alexei Navalny*, noted some social media users in Southern Russia. Some users doubted that the causes of the convict’s death were natural. In their comments, social media users expressed their condolences to the politician’s family.

In August 2020, Alexei Navalny* fell into a coma after being poisoned at an airport in Omsk. He regained consciousness in Berlin, where he was taken for medical treatment. Alexei Navalny* said that the Russian authorities stood behind the attempt on his life.

In Krasnodar, people brought flowers in memory of Alexei Navalny* and laid them to the memorial to the victims of fascism. The people coming to the monument were monitored by city administration employees, the “Sota” reported.

One of those who came to lay flowers put a leaflet on the memorial with the inscription reading: “We are unusually strong this time. Don’t give up!”, but officials removed it, the “7x7 - Horizontal Russia”** reported. In total, about twenty people gathered near the monument.

The rallies in support of Alexei Navalny*, which took place in January 2021 throughout Russia, were recognized by political analysts as the largest in recent decades.

*On January 25, 2022, the “Rosfinmonitoring” (the Russian Federal Service for Financial Monitoring) included Alexei Navalny into the register of extremists and terrorists. He is a founder of the Anti-Corruption Foundation (known as FBK), an NCO that is included by the Russian Ministry of Justice (MoJ) in the register of NCOs performing functions of a foreign agent, recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation. On February 2, 2021, in Moscow, a court sentenced Alexei Navalny to 3.5 years of imprisonment, and later, new charges were brought against him, and his imprisonment term was prolonged. In a penal colony, Alexei Navalny was charged with fraud and contempt of court and sentenced to 9 years of imprisonment. Furthermore, Alexei Navalny was also sentenced to 19 years of imprisonment in a case on disorganizing the penal colony, extremism, and rehabilitation of Nazism. In April 2023, Alexei Navalny announced that he faced life imprisonment in the case on terrorism. Recognized as a “prisoner of conscience.”
