ECtHR finds rights violations of three convicts from Chechnya

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) in Strasbourg has awarded compensations to three natives of Chechnya who had been exposed to inhumane treatment while being transported to their jails.

The convicts from Chechnya, Zelimkhan Dudaev, 45, Said Asadulaev, 44, and Umar Baisiev, 49, complained about the torturous conditions of their transfer to the penal colony: long transportation in overcrowded van without access to toilet, without warm water and fresh air.

Also, the complaints contained absence of efficient legal remedies for prisoners in the Russian legislation.

The ECtHR has awarded each EUR 1000 as compensation to all the three convicts.

Zelimkhan Dudaev was convicted in Gudermes in 2018 under a murder article; and in the same year, a court in the Rostov Region found Umar Baisiev guilty of causing grievous bodily harm, the "Kavkaz.Realii"* project has noted.

The "Caucasian Knot" has also reported that this January, the ECtHR awarded EUR 8500 to Ruslan Rakhaev, a former deputy head of the Cherkessk criminal investigation division, for torturous conditions of his transportation to colony.
