Mobilized man from Kuban convicted of evading service

A court in Maykop has sentenced Vladimir Litenkov, a military service man from the Krasnodar Territory (also known as Kuban), to five years in a penal colony, finding him guilty of leaving his unit without permission.

In June 2023, he left his unit's temporary deployment site in the Zaporozhye Region of Ukraine and went home to the village of Vostochny, Krasnodar Territory, the "Kavkaz.Realii"* reports.

According to the verdict, Litenkov was mobilized in September 2022, and left his unit on June 30, 2023; and on October 18, he was detained by employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) in the Belorechensky District of the Krasnodar Territory.

While assessing his actions, the court proceeded from the fact that from September 21, 2022, "a partial mobilization was announced in the Russian Federation, which was not completed during the period when Litenkov committed the crime."

An unauthorized abandonment of one's military unit by a mobilized serviceman is treated as a crime; and there is a trend towards tougher punishments, human rights defenders indicated last December, noting that freedom deprivation for five years or more had become common.
