Activist Atamanchuk treats case on defamation as fabricated

At a court hearing in a case on defamation instituted against Vladimir Atamanchuk, the judge dismissed all the motions filed by the defence; and the activist called the case a politically motivated falsification.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on November 11, investigators closed the case on discrediting the Russian Armed Forces against Sochi activist Vladimir Atamanchuk, but instituted a criminal case on defamation against him.

Earlier, Vladimir Atamanchuk has claimed that the police offered him to admit guilt in defamation in exchange for dropping the case on discrediting the Russian Armed Forces. Advocate Roman Klykov has emphasized that putting pressure on the defendant to force him incriminate himself is unacceptable.

Vladimir Atamanchuk, a 72-year-old retired doctor and candidate for the Sochi City Assembly, is accused of defaming his election rivals Valery Baev from the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (CPRF), Kira Skripal from the “Novye Ludi” (New People) Party, and Veronika Ivanchikova from the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR). Veronika Ivanchikova won a seat at the Sochi City Assembly.

All three above-mentioned persons identified Vladimir Atamanchuk in a video in which an unknown person looking like the defendant was placing leaflets in mailboxes of a residential building in the Lazarevsky District, which contained information about the candidates, called defaming.

Vladimir Atamanchuk has claimed that the case against him was fabricated. The activist denies that he wrote, printed, and distributed the above-mentioned leaflets and denies that he is pictured in the mentioned video.

Valery Baev, one of the victims in the case, has said that he did not write a complaint against Vladimir Atamanchuk and has no claims against him.
