In Kalmykia, journalist Badmaev sentenced to a fine and a ban on publications

In Elista, a court found Valery Badmaev, the editor-in-chief of the “Modern Kalmykia” publication, guilty of discrediting the Russian Armed Forces and sentenced him to a fine of 150,000 roubles. The editor-in-chief of the “Modern Kalmykia” is also banned for two years from posting materials on the Internet and publishing a newspaper. Valery Badmaev considered the accusation unproven.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on October 13, the Elista City Court began considering the case against Valery Badmaev, accused of discrediting the Russian Armed Forces. A public prosecutor requested the court to sentence the 72-year-old journalist to three years of imprisonment.

On April 4, 2022, Valery Badmaev was found guilty under the administrative article of discrediting the Russian Armed Forces and fined, and on December 9, he was detained in a criminal case for reposting a video about a shelling attack on Mariupol. At the same time, the forensic examination did not find any signs of discrediting the Russian Armed Forces in the video.

The journalist emphasized that the ban on the release of information content for two years is a sensitive measure for many residents of the republic. “It is important for people to read and listen to my resources, as they need independent information ... Of course, this is a very tough measure,” Valery Badmaev admitted.
