RJC treats anti-Semitic protests in NCFD as atypical

The events at the Makhachkala Airport and the anti-Semitic actions held in Khasavyurt, Cherkessk and Nalchik are atypical for the North-Caucasian Federal District (NCFD) and Russia as a whole; they threaten the interreligious and interethnic harmony in the country, the Russian Jewish Congress (RJC) has stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on October 29, hundreds of residents of Dagestan gathered at the Makhachkala Airport for the arrival of a flight from Tel Aviv. They declared that they would not allow Jews to enter Dagestan and had clashes with the police; according to the Dagestani Ministry of Public Health, more than 20 people were wounded.

The RJC's website has noted that what happened was "unprecedented in scale" and could cause "uncontrollable tragic consequences."

The RJC has also thanked the residents of Dagestan of different nationalities and religions, who are making every effort to resolve the situation. "The RJC is convinced that anti-Semitism is contrary to the spirit and traditions of North-Caucasian nations; it has no place in multinational Russia," the RJC has stated.
