Dagestani journalist Gadjiev’s colleagues and friends share their expectations of verdict

Prior to the pronouncement of the verdict against Dagestani journalist Abdulmumin Gadjiev, residents of Dagestan are actively interested in the progress of the trial, and this fact was facilitated by the final speech delivered by the journalist, his colleagues and friends note. They believe that the verdict will be challenged.

On September 11, at his solo picket in Makhachkala, Magomed Magomedov, a deputy editor-in-chief of the Dagestani weekly newspaper “Chernovik”, demanded to stop the criminal prosecution of Abdulmumin Gadjiev. The pronouncement of the verdict against the defendants in the Abdulmumin Gadjiev’s case is scheduled for September 12.

Abdulmumin Gadjiev, an editor of the newspaper “Chernovik”, Abubakar Rizvanov, the head of the “Ansar” charitable foundation, and Kemal Tambiev have been arrested since June 2019 on the charges of financing terrorism.

The people’s increased interest in the outcome of the Abdulmumin Gadjiev’s case is evidenced by the number of people who posted to their status in messengers the abstracts from his speech in the courtroom, as well as the number of views of the video on social networks with the Abdulmumin Gadjiev’s speech, notes journalist Idris Yusupov.

The journalist emphasizes that the public reaction to any verdict against Abdulmumin Gadjiev will be heightened. “If they pronounce a long sentence, then the reaction of society will be extremely indignant. If it is a short sentence, the public reaction will be extremely negative, because the accusation has crumbled and there is no evidence,” explained Idris Yusupov.

According to one of the Abdulmumin Gadjiev’s friends, more than 10 people came from Dagestan to Rostov-on-Don to support Abdulmumin Gadjiev during the pronouncement of the verdict.
