Defence of Kizilyurt policeman seeks investigation into his torture in SIZO

Magomed Piraev, a former criminal investigator of the Kizilyurt Department of Internal Affairs, who was sentenced for hostage-taking, robbery, and illicit firearms trafficking, was tortured in a SIZO (pre-trial prison). His defence is seeking the institution of criminal cases based on the results of inspections based on Magomed Piraev’s complaints, reports advocate Nadezhda Borodkina.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on September 13, 2022, it became known that Magomed Piraev had obtained compensation for the violence used against him in the SIZO.

Magomed Piraev was involved in a case instituted against Askhabali Zairbekov, the chief of the Kizilyurt Department of Internal Affairs in Dagestan. They were accused of robbery, hostage-taking, theft, and illicit firearm trafficking. In September 2016, the court acquitted Askhabali Zairbekov, but sentenced three other defendants to long terms of imprisonment. Magomed Piraev was sentenced to 15 years of imprisonment in a high-security penal colony.

Magomed Piraev was released after he took part in the special military operation (SMO) in Ukraine, advocate Nadezhda Borodkina reported.

“Now he is trying to carve out his life. He has not found a job yet, and in my opinion, he needs a rehabilitation programme after 10 years in prison and half a year of hostilities,” said the advocate.

Nadezhda Borodkina notes that she believes Magomed Piraev’s words about torture, since another client, later rehabilitated by the court, told her the same thing. “My client was beaten by SIZO warders so that he was not able to sit or lie down, and he had to stand in a punishment cell for 15 hours,” explained the defender.

Let us remind you that in the summer of 2013, relatives of Magomed Piraev held a picket in Makhachkala to protest against the violation of his rights. Magomed Piraev complained that he was tortured with electric current.
