European Parliament suggests to nominate Politkovskaya for Sakharov Prize

Pole Yatsek Sariush-Volski, head of the Committee of European Parliament for International Matters, has suggested to nominate Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya posthumously for 2007 Andrei Sakharov, a representative of the press service of the European Parliament has informed today.

Mr Sariush-Volski represents the largest fraction of the European Parliament - the European Peoples' Party - European Democrats.

The Sakharov Prize "For Freedom of Thought" was founded by the European Parliament in 1988 and is awarded annually for "achievements in the cause of protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms, and also for respect of international legislation and development of democracy," the RIA "Novosti" reports.

  • Convicts in Dagestani journalist Gadjiev's case transferred to Grozny SIZO

    Abdulmumin Gadjiev, Abubakar Rizvanov and Kemal Tambiev, who are waiting for consideration of their appeal complaints against verdicts, have been transferred from the Novocherkassk SIZO (pre-trial prison) to the Grozny one, Gadjiev's wife has reported, while one of Gadjiev's colleagues has added that his solo picket in Gadjiev's support sparked interest among passers-by in Makhachkala.
