ECtHR awards compensations to Krasnodar activists

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has recognized violations of the rights of six Krasnodar residents who were detained at rallies in Krasnodar in 2017 and 2018.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 5, 2018, in Krasnodar, law enforcers dispersed a rally of supporters of Alexei Navalny*, which was timed to the inauguration of Vladimir Putin. The Navalny's local office* reported that from 40 to 60 people were detained, including minors. At least seven activists were fined.

Kirill Timchenko, Vilen Dyomin and Andrei Yakimov were among those detained in Krasnodar in 2018. The local court found them guilty of violating the law on holding public events and fined them. In its turn, the ECtHR has ruled in their favour, calling it illegal to bring them to the police station. The activists were awarded compensations of 4000 euros each.

The ECtHR awarded 3500 euros in compensation to those detained in Krasnodar in October 2017, namely to Alexander Khimich, Vitaly Molodanov and Arthur Belyakov.

On October 7, 2017, about 200 supporters of Navalny* came to the administration building of the Krasnodar Territory and demanded a meeting with the governor. A total of 30 people were detained at the rally; they were accused of taking part in an unsanctioned rally.

"Unfortunately, the ECtHR's decisions are very belated and fail to fully reflect all the rights violations committed in Russia," the "Kavkaz.Realii"** project quotes Vitaly Molodanov, an activist, as stating. He doesn't expect to receive the payments – in 2022, the ECtHR already ruled in his favour on the detention at another action, but he received no compensation as Russia quitted the Council of Europe.
