In December 2022, two persons perished in armed conflict in Northern Caucasus

In December 2022, two people perished in the armed conflict in Northern Caucasus; there were no reports about the wounded ones. These are the results of the calculations run by the "Caucasian Knot" based on its own materials and information from open sources.

On December 26, agents of the Russian FSB (Federal Security Service) found two armed men in a forest near Nalchik, the capital of Kabardino-Balkaria, and demanded to surrender, but the men opened fire on them and were killed by return fire. The FSB informed that the casualties had been earlier convicted citizens of Russia, who "on instructions of Ukrainian special services" were preparing a terror act in the town of Chegem, and then planned to leave for Ukraine to participate in hostilities against Russian troops. Firearms, ammunition and an improvised explosive device (IED) were seized from the venue of the shootout. The criminal case is being investigated under the articles on illicit trafficking in weapons, explosive devices and encroachment on lives of law enforcers, the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF) has reported.

In other regions of Northern Caucasus, which also include Dagestan, Ingushetia, Karachay-Cherkessia, North Ossetia-Alania, the Stavropol Territory and Chechnya, no armed incidents or conflict victims were recorded in December 2022.

The presented statistics cannot accurately reflect the precise number of victims. Not all data is included in the news bulletins. It is not always possible to check how true the statements of law enforcement bodies are; and new data on the events of the reporting period become known sometimes after the publication of statistics by the "Caucasian Knot".

Earlier, in November 2022, two people also perished during the armed conflict.
