UN calls for release of detainees at anti-mobilization protests in Dagestan

During two days of protests against mobilization in Makhachkala, dozens of people were detained and arrested, an official of the United Nations (UN) High Commissioner has pointed out and called for the release of those arrested.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on September 27, a court in Makhachkala arrested eight protesters against mobilization; and three other young women were fined. On September 26, in the square in Makhachkala, where protesters against mobilization gathered, a mass brawl broke out, and law enforcers detained at least 150 people. Half of them were left at the police station until September 28, human rights defenders informed.

On September 25, in Makhachkala, law enforcers also violently dispersed a protest action against mobilization. According to rights defenders, 101 people were detained.

The UN is "deeply concerned" by the large number of those arrested for the protests after Russian authorities announced a partial mobilization, Raveena Shamdasani, an employee of the UN High Commissioner, has stated, noting that in Dagestan, the protests lasted for two days.
