"Voice of Beslan" opposes construction of museum in territory of School No. 1

Until the inquiry into the Beslan terror act is completed, the construction of a museum in this territory could destroy the evidence, Emma Tagaeva, an activist of the "Voice of Beslan", asserts.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in August 2021, the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, approved the idea of a museum and a pantheon in Beslan, noting that this is a tragic story in the life of the country, and it requires special attention and participation.

On September 1, 2004, militants captured 1128 hostages in the gym of School No. 1 in Beslan. The operation to free them ended on September 3, 2004. As a result of the terror act, 334 people perished, including 186 children; other 810 people received various wounds.

However, Emma Tagaeva believes that any construction in the territory of School No. 1 is unacceptable. Until the investigation is completed, the tragedy venue should be preserved unchanged, she has stated.

According to her story, in mid-August, the "Voice of Beslan" drafted letters appealing against the construction of the museum. After collecting about three hundred signatures, they sent letters to Sergei Menyailo, the head of the region, and to Mikhail Reshetnikov, the Minister for Economic Development. No answers have been received yet.

On the other hand, the "Beslan Mothers" Committee is in favour of the construction, saying that it will become a place of people's consolidation.

"We would like this place to bring people together, so that they could hear each other, talk to each other, even if they have different opinions and different viewpoints, so that they try to hear and understand each other. […] We want this pain to grow into something constructive so that our sacrifice, the sacrifice of our children, was not in vain," said Aneta Gadieva, a co-chair of the committee.
