Comedian Lolaeva from North Ossetia fined for discrediting Russian Armed Forces

In Vladikavkaz, a court recognized records of stand-up comedian Ariana Lolaeva posted on the Internet as discrediting the Russian Armed Forces and fined the comedian 50,000 roubles. The concept of “discrediting” is formulated in the law in a vague way, which allows for the extremely broad interpretation of the law, advocate Sultan Telkhigov points out.

According to the advocate, his client “used her right to freedom of expression,” the “Kavkaz. Realii”** reports.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on October 9, 2021, stand-up comedians Sasha Ni and Ariana Lolaeva posted a video apologizing for obscene jokes about Ossetians during the “Roast Battle-2020”. Even after two public apologies, Ariana Lolaeva continued to receive threats, her aunt said. According to analysts, social media have become a platform for harassment with impunity, and public humiliation, following Chechnya and Dagestan, is also becoming a practice in North Ossetia.
