Georgia's Ombudsperson demands to ensure prisoners' safety

Violence, coercion and extortion of money from prisoners are common in Georgian jails, where members of criminal subcultures establish order, the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture has found out. Nino Lomdjariya, the Ombudsperson of Georgia, has called on the authorities to solve these problems.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on January 21, 2020, Nino Lomdjariya presented a report on the situation in Georgian prisons and stated that because of the informal hierarchy among prisoners, non-authoritative convicts are forced to endure harassments.

Several prisoners interviewed by the delegation of the European Union (EU) told about insults and threats. In the opinion of the above Committee, the main reason for such conflicts is in monetary relations among prisoners.

On May 20, 2021, during a visit to an institution in Rustavi, the delegation witnessed a conflict among prisoners; one of them was hospitalized with traumas. Also during the visit, it became known that a prisoner was killed during a skirmish.
