Telegram users like Turkey’s statement about victims of Caucasian war

On the eve of the 158th anniversary of the end of the Caucasian War, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Turkey called the mass expulsion of Circassians from the Caucasus a tragedy. Some Telegram users have shared the Turkish Minister’s position.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that May 21 marks the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Caucasian War. This year, activists in Kabardino-Balkaria failed to get an authorities’ sanction for a mourning procession, but other events will take place.

The Caucasian war, which lasted from 1763 to 1864, brought the Adygs (Circassians) to the brink of extinction. The Russia’s authorities have not yet recognized the genocide of the Circassians during the Caucasian War.

“During the invasion of the Caucasus by Tsarist Russia, hundreds of thousands of representatives of the Caucasian peoples perished. Many of the survivors were expelled from their homeland and had to take refuge in Anatolia. Today, we still feel the pain of that tragedy,” said Tanju Bilgiç, the spokesperson for the Turkish MFA.

The statement of the MFA of Turkey has also been posted on a Telegram channel. In their comments, some users liked the position of the Turkey’s authorities.

Let us remind you that on October 10, 2021, the Circassian Diaspora in Turkey opened a monument in Istanbul dedicated to the genocide and expulsion of Circassians from their historical homeland. According to initiators of the event, the opening of the monument is connected with the efforts of the Circassian Diaspora in Turkey to achieve recognition of the genocide of the Circassians.
