Muslims celebrate Eid al-Fitr in regions of Southern Russia

Today, a festive collective namaz (prayer) has taken place in mosques of Dagestan on the occasion of the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, the republic’s Spiritual Administration of Muslims (SAM) reports. In other regions of Southern Russia, the Muftiates also announced prayers for the holiday of Eid al-Fitr.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that this year, the holiday of Eid al-Adha fell on May 2.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim lunar calendar, the month of fasting (as-saum), spiritual and moral purification, and strengthening of faith and will. During Ramadan, Muslims must abstain from food and drink during daylight hours. During Ramadan, every evening, the cathedral mosques of Northern Caucasus hold collective iftars (breaking the fast), says the reference material of the "Caucasian Knot" about Ramadan.

The mosques of Dagestan held festive prayers in honour of Eid al-Fitr, the republic’s Muftiate reported on its Telegram channel.

The Central Mosque of Maikop also schedules a namaz (prayer) on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr, reports the website of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Adygea and the Krasnodar Territory.

Earlier, in Northern Caucasus, there were disputes about the start date of the holiday – in particular, Dagestan sometimes celebrated Eid al-Fitr a day later than other regions. The same concerned Ramadan – the Muftiate of Chechnya repeatedly transferred the date of the beginning of the ninth month of the Muslim lunar calendar, since, according to republic’s alims (scholars of Islamic law), the young crescent Moon, which marks the beginning of the holy month, can be seen there later than in other regions of the North-Caucasian Federal District (NCFD).
