EU and at least 10 other states do not recognize presidential election in South Ossetia

At least 10 states refused to recognize the presidential election in South Ossetia and came out in support of the territorial integrity of Georgia. A similar statement was made by a representative of the European Union (EU).

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on April 11, the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Germany and Azerbaijan refused to recognize the election of the President of South Ossetia, speaking in support of the territorial integrity of Georgia. Earlier, the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, Lithuania, and Latvia also called the presidential election in South Ossetia illegal and null and void.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of the Czech Republic does not recognize the presidential election in South Ossetia and considers its results illegitimate. “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic expresses its full support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia,” the Radio Prague International quotes today the country’s MFA as declaring.

Thus, the Czech Republic became at least the tenth state that did not recognize the presidential election in South Ossetia. Similar statements, in addition to the Czech Republic, Azerbaijan, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, and Georgia, were also made by Ukraine, Poland, Slovakia, and the United States.

On April 10, Carl Hartzell, Ambassador of the European Union to Georgia, announced that the EU also did not recognize the presidential election in South Ossetia. “The European Union does not recognize the constitutional and legal framework in which the so-called presidential election took place in the Georgian breakaway region of South Ossetia,” Carl Hartzell said in his statement.
