Georgia condemns presidential election in South Ossetia

Elections in South Ossetia are illegal and will have no legal force, the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has stated. A similar statement was made by the MFAs of Lithuania and Latvia.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on April 11, South Ossetia held its presidential election.

The Georgian MFA has declared the illegality of the South-Ossetian presidential election. "This action is Russian Federation's another illegal act against Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity, which is completely contrary to the norms and principles of the international law. Such provocative actions are aimed at legitimizing the illegal occupation of Georgia's regions," says the statement posted on the website of the Georgia's MFA. It adds that this election, as well as the suggested referendum on joining Russia, will not have any legal force.

Similar statements were made by the MFAs of Lithuania and Latvia. "Lithuania treats as illegal and doesn't recognize the so-called 'presidential election' that was held on April 10 in the Russian-occupied Tskhinvali region of Georgia," the Lithuanian MFA said in its statement, the text of which was quoted by the "InterPressNews".

"Latvia treats as illegitimate and doesn't recognize the so-called 'presidential election' in South Ossetia, the Latvian MFA said in a statement posted on the Twitter on April 11.
