ECtHR refuses to consider Saakashvili's complaint

The complaint of the third President of Georgia, Mikheil (Mikhail) Saakashvili, filed with the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) on his medical care and treatment in custody has been excluded from the list of cases that are under consideration, Beka Dzamashvili, a Deputy Minister of Justice of Georgia has informed. Saakashvili said that he himself asked to suspend the consideration of the complaint.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on February 21, Mikhail Saakashvili announced a new endless hunger strike demanding to provide him with proper medical care. However, on March 10, he interrupted his hunger strike because of the situation in Ukraine. On March 13, he said that doctors from a civilian clinic in Tbilisi examined him and confirmed his grave illnesses.

The ECtHR has excluded Saakashvili's complaint about his treatment in the country's penitentiary system from the list of the cases pending consideration, Mr Dzamashvili has informed.

"According to the ECtHR's assessment, there are no special circumstances in this case from the viewpoint of human rights that would require additional consideration of this issue," the "News-Georgia" quoted the deputy minister as saying on April 2. He believes that the ECtHR's refusal to consider Saakashvili's case has confirmed that his medical care and general treatment "were completely in line with the standards established by the ECtHR; and his rights and interests are fully respected."

In his turn, Mikhail Saakashvili claims that the ECtHR has suspended the consideration of his complaint at his own request made shortly after he was admitted to the Gori Military Hospital.
