Bibilov proposes to unite North and South Ossetia

South Ossetia may become part of Russia as a separate subject and then unite with North Ossetia. This has been proposed today by Anatoly Bibilov, President of South Ossetia. The referendum on joining Russia will not have legal force, emphasizes Georgian Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that South Ossetia will soon take legal steps to join Russia, as Anatoly Bibilov, the president of the partially recognized republic, said on March 30.

Initially, South Ossetia may become part of Russia as a separate subject of Russia, but in the future it could become a single subject with North Ossetia, President of the Republic Anatoly Bibilov states. “Consultations with our Russian colleagues are already underway. When we are already part of the Russian Federation, within the Russian Federation, there are procedures related to the unification of subjects. (...) I think that the unification of Ossetia is necessary,” Anatoly Bibilov said in his interview to the “Russia 24” TV Channel.

Joining Russia will greatly increase the security of the republic, Anatoly Bibilov emphasizes.

Today, David Zalkaliani, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Ministry of Georgia, has noted that the referendum in South Ossetia will not have legal force. “Under the conditions of occupation, no referendum will have legal force, especially since hundreds of thousands of Georgian citizens have been expelled from their homes and (...) do not have the opportunity to return to their homes,” said David Zalkaliani as quoted by the “News-Georgia”.
