Georgia treats parliamentary elections in Abkhazia as illegal
Tbilisi would not recognize the elections in Abkhazia and regards them as an illegal act against the sovereignty of Georgia, the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has stated.
On March 12, voting was held at the elections to the People's Assembly (Parliament) of Abkhazia.
"The holding of the so-called elections is completely contrary to the norms of the international law and is another attempt to legitimize the illegal occupation of two regions of Georgia," the Georgian MFA has stated.
Tbilisi has asked the international community "to take measures in connection with this next illegal step," the "News-Georgia" reports.
Russia is also mentioned; since Tbilisi calls on it to respect its international obligations, to fulfil the ceasefire agreement of August 12, 2008, concluded with the mediation of the European Union (EU), and to overturn its decision to recognize the independence of Abkhazia, the "InterPressNews" has reported.
