Participant of anti-war rally near Russian Embassy detained in Baku
Two activists held a protest action in front of the Russian Embassy in Azerbaijan calling for an end to the aggression in Ukraine. The activists demanded from the Azerbaijani authorities to break the alliance agreement with Russia. Activist Elman Guliev, who planned to hand over the text of the appeal to the Russian Embassy, was detained by the police.
The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on February 22, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliev signed a declaration on allied cooperation. A day earlier, Vladimir Putin has signed documents recognizing the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, and today, the Russian President has announced the start of a military operation in connection with the situation in Donbass.
The declaration on allied cooperation obliges Baku to respect the interests of Moscow and creates the risk of complicating the Azerbaijan’s relations with Turkey as a member of NATO, political analysts note.
Activist Elman Guliev and Orkhan Bakhishly, the head of the “Bizim Monitor” (Our Monitor) YouTube channel held a rally in front of the Russian Embassy in Azerbaijan, the “Meydan.Tv” reports.
Orkhan Bakhishly said that “Russia rejected the path of diplomacy and chose war.” Elman Guliev read out an appeal of the protesters, in which the Russia’s special military operation was regarded as “an act of war and an encroachment on the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine.”
