Doctors call to provide Saakashvili with psychotherapy

Mikheil (Mikhail) Saakashvili is in depression; he has general weakness and anaemia; he is not provided with necessary psychological assistance, the panel of doctors has indicated in its conclusion; the panel was convoked on the initiative of the Georgian Ombudsperson.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in December 2021, after returning from the hospital to the Rustavi Prison, Mikhail Saakashvili demanded to let independent doctors examine him and ensure his confidential meetings with advocates. He threatened to resort to extreme protest forms if his demands were not met by the end of January.

Saakashvili returned to Georgia in late September and was arrested on October 1, as he had been sentenced in absentia in Georgia to imprisonment within two criminal cases. After his arrest, he held a 50-day-long hunger strike, which he stopped after achieving a transfer from prison and the prison hospital to a military one.

On January 19, a panel of doctors convoked on November 16, 2021, at the initiative of the Ombudsperson of Georgia, issued a conclusion on the condition of Mikhail Saakashvili.

The former Georgia president is in a state of depression and a post-traumatic stress condition; he experiences general weakness, anaemia and neurological symptoms, the panel has concluded. Saakashvili receives only medical treatment, while he is not provided with the psychological assistance that was recommended by doctors back on November 25, 2021, says the conclusion of the doctors' panel, which the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent got acquainted with.
