Argun

Town in Shali rayon (sector) of Chechnya, 16 km east of Grozny. Located on the Chechen (Grozny) foothill plain, on the Argun River (right tributary of the Sunzha River, in the Terek Basin; the Chechen name being the Orga). Railway station in the Grozny - Makhachkala line. Population (1992 est.) 27.6 thousand. Transformed into a town out of a large Chechen village in 1967. Until 1995, Argun had a steam power plant, a works of food-processing industry machines, a sugar-refinery, a meat-processing plant, an integrated house-building factory, etc. During the armed conflict of 1994-1996, the majority of the enterprises were destroyed and are not functioning at present.
