In 2020, a total of 1700 people were listed as missing in Chechnya; and within the nine months of 2021 – the number is 1659. The republic is in the lead in this parameter in the North-Caucasian Federal District (NCFD), and the third in Russia: it follows from the statistics of the Russia's Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA).

In total, in 2020, the NCFD had 3395 missing persons on the wanted list. In Dagestan, 346 missing persons were wanted; in Ingushetia – 116, in Kabardino-Balkaria – 196; in Karachay-Cherkessia – 256; in North Ossetia – 238; and in the Stavropol Territory – 643 ones. In Chechnya, 1700 people were wanted last year; this is the third indicator in among Russian regions. Most of the wanted missing persons were listed in Moscow (2911) and the Moscow Region (2043). It follows from the data posted on the website of the Unified Interdepartmental Information and Statistical System (known as EMISS).

After the first nine months of 2021, the number of missing residents of the NCFD was 3208, including 324 missing persons in Dagestan, 107 – in Ingushetia, 177 – in Kabardino-Balkaria, 153 – in Karachay-Cherkessia, 230 in North Ossetia, 578 – in the Stavropol Territory, and 1639 – in Chechnya.

Annually in Chechnya, no more than 20-30 missing persons are found; in North Ossetia and Karachay-Cherkessia, they find every tenth one, the RIA "Novosti" has reported.

The "Caucasian Knot" has repeatedly reported about disappearances of residents of Chechnya. Thus, Zelimkhan Bakaev, a singer, who lived in Moscow, arrived in Grozny in August 2017 for his sister's wedding, after which he disappeared. Relatives stated that they had been looking for Bakaev, but failed to establish his whereabouts.
