Kadyrov’s statement about women contradicts actions of Chechen authorities

Showing respect for women is in line with the Chechen traditions and is not considered shameful, Ramzan Kadyrov declares. His statement came against the background of the practice in Chechnya of public condemnation of women and pressure on young women wearing niqabs.

“There is no doubt that we must be patient with our women, show them more attention and warmth, and take care of them,” the leader of Chechnya wrote on his VKontakte page. Ramzan Kadyrov recalled that November 28 was the Mother’s Day.

Let us remind you that in September 2019, when commenting on wedding videos posted on social media, Ramzan Kadyrov said that he would not allow violators of local traditions to live in Chechnya.

Chechen blogger Tumso Abdurakhmanov then recalled that Ramzan Kadyrov himself had violated the traditions by talking on the TV channel about his relationship with his wife. YouTube users agreed that Ramzan Kadyrov had no moral right to criticize violators of the Chechen traditions.

The very first episode of the campaign to inculcate “morality for women” in Chechnya dated back to 2006, when Ramzan Kadyrov was the Prime Minister of Chechnya, the human rights organization “Human Rights Watch” pointed out in 2011. Then Ramzan Kadyrov said that the use of mobile phones negatively affected the moral character of women, since that allegedly gave them the opportunity to flirt with men, make dates, etc. After that, local law enforcers confiscated mobile phones from young women.
