Shootouts worsen prospects for demarcation of border between Armenia and Azerbaijan

Armed incidents on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan were initiated to disrupt the OSCE Minsk Group format for resolving the conflict between the two countries. Armenia can refuse the agreement on demarcation and delimitation of the border by proposing to appeal to the International Court of Justice, the Armenian political analysts note.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that the border conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan escalated in November. Armenia has repeatedly offered Azerbaijan to sign a peace treaty and begin the process of demarcation, but did not receive any response, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan declares.

Any demarcation will be illegal from the point of view of both the international law and the Constitution of Armenia, political analyst Ara Papyan states. According to him, at a meeting of the Security Council of Armenian, Nikol Pashinyan accused Azerbaijan of aggression.

Let us remind you that Azerbaijani analysts consider baseless the assertions that maps of the USSR era are not suitable for delimiting the border between Azerbaijan and Armenia. According to Azerbaijani analysts, the UN recognized the borders between the countries within the borders that existed under the USSR.

Political analyst Andrias Gukasyan considers it impossible to sign any agreement on border delimitation bypassing the OSCE Minsk Group.

Political observer Naira Airumyan suggests that the destabilization on the line of contact and consent to demarcation and delimitation is aimed to disrupt the resolution of the conflict under the format of the OSCE Minsk Group.
