Armenia requests Russia to intervene in conflict with Azerbaijan

The Security Council of Armenia called on Russia to intervene in the conflict with Azerbaijan and to protect the border area of Armenia from an attack. The fighting at the border continues, and four Armenian soldiers were wounded, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) of Armenia reports.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that today, the Ministry of Defence of Azerbaijan reported about two Azerbaijani soldiers wounded in a shootout after an attempt by Armenian soldiers to seize the heights in the Kelbadjar and Lachin Districts. The Armenian MoD accused the Azerbaijani side of attempting to advance troops on the border. Later, the parties to the conflict exchanged accusations of shelling attacks.

Yerevan called on Moscow to defend the territory of Armenia in accordance with the agreement of 1997, Secretary of the Security Council of Armenia Armen Grigoryan said on the air of the Public TV Channel.

“Azerbaijan attacked Armenia in the eastern part of its border,” Armen Grigoryan explained. He has added that the Azerbaijani troops have been on the sovereign territory of Armenia since May 12.

The Security Council of Armenia expects Russia to provide assistance to Armenia, and the country will restore its territorial integrity, Armen Grigoryan notes.

Karen Kocharyan, the deputy head of the Goris community, confirms that the situation on the eastern part of the border is tense. “In the city of Goris, people hear shelling, taking place in the area between Ishkhanasar and Sisian,” Karen Kocharyan reports.
