Suspect of raping Azerbaijani activist arrested

A court in Baku has arrested for four months a person accused of raping a minor activist. The girl's mother believes that the arrest was achieved thanks to a public campaign.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the girl's family failed to achieve an inquiry into the rape; the girl's mother treats it as revenge for her daughter's activity in protecting women's rights. Gyulnara Mekhtieva, a feminist, was detained on October 19 at a rally demanding to bring her companion's rapist to justice.

The victim's mother believes that the rapist's arrest was possible thanks to public support. "Mostly women and girls have supported us. More than 1000 people signed up the petition to the authorities ... There were appeals from international women's NGOs. Foreign media wrote about injustice against my daughter," the woman said.
