Saakashvili's supporters urge him to stop hunger strike

Saakashvili's supporters gathered for a spontaneous action near the Rustavi Prison, demanded to release him and urged him to stop his hunger strike.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Mikheil (Mikhail) Saakashvili, a former president of Georgia, was detained on October 1 after he returned to Georgia and was placed into the Rustavi Prison, where he went on a hunger strike and promised to hold it until his release. On October 10, Nikoloz Kipshidze, his personal doctor, said that Saakashvili's health condition had seriously deteriorated in recent days.

In Georgia, Mikhail Saakashvili was sentenced in absentia to three years of imprisonment in a case on abuse of power when pardoning those convicted for the murder of businessman Sandro Girgvliani and to six years of imprisonment in a case on the 2005 beating of MP Valery Gelashvili. The former president of Georgia also faces other charges.

In the evening on October 10, Saakashvili's supporters gathered near the Rustavi Prison for a spontaneous protest action. They demanded to release the former president and urged him to stop his hunger strike.

In its turn, the country's Penitentiary Service has refuted the information about the deterioration of Saakashvili's health, treating the data spread by media as untrue.

Nika Meliya, the leader of the "United National Movement" (UNM) Party, has also asked Saakashvili to end his hunger strike. He announced an action for October 14, which will bring together "all those who are against these anti-popular authorities." The action is planned to be held in Rustaveli Avenue.
