Murder of Politkovskaya becomes exception to practice of statute of limitations on crimes

The case on the murder of Anna Politkovskaya is being investigated under an article that provides for capital punishment, and the practice of a 15-year statute of limitations is extremely rarely applied in such cases, lawyers note. According to them, the resonant murder of the journalist is not an exceptional case.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that today marks the 15th anniversary of the murder of Anna Politkovskaya, a correspondent of the newspaper “Novaya Gazeta”. According to the Russian legislation, this year the “statute of limitations” on crime expires, and it can only be extended by a court, otherwise customers of the murder will go unpunished, the “Novaya Gazeta” reports.

Anna Politkovskaya, well known for her articles about the war and human rights violations in Chechnya, was killed in Moscow on October 7, 2006.

The murder of Anna Politkovskaya, a prominent journalist, is a grave crime, and the likelihood that the court will apply the statute of limitations is zero, “unless a defendant in the case is dying,” motes Igor Trunov, the chair of the Union of Lawyers of Russia.

The conclusion of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) that the investigation into the case on Anna Politkovskaya’s murder was not effective has nothing to do with the statute of limitations, the lawyer explains.

Let us remind you that Anna Politkovskaya gave her last interview to the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent an hour and a half before her tragic death. In her interview, she commented on the career prospects of Ramzan Kadyrov.
