In Baku, Court of Appeal recognizes arrest of journalist Aslanov’s brother as lawful

The Baku Court of Appeal refused to grant a complaint filed by Niyameddin Aslanzade about his administrative arrest. Niyameddin Aslanzade was taken into custody as a warning to his brother, Azerbaijani journalist Polad Aslanov, not to complain about the violation of the rights of prisoners, a spouse of Polad Aslanov suggests.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that in August, Niyameddin Aslanzade, a brother of convicted Azerbaijani journalist Polad Aslanov, was placed under administrative arrest. The journalist regarded his brother’s arrest as pressure on himself.

Niyameddin Aslanzade has informed the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent that the Baku Court of Appeal (BCA) has considered today his complaint about arrest.

“Although I am already at large, it is important for me to cancel the illegal court’s decision about my arrest. However, the Baku Court of Appeal, with no grounds, upheld the decision, basing only on the police protocol,” Niyameddin Aslanzade said.

Gyulmira Aslanova, the spouse of Azerbaijani journalist Polad Aslanov, suggests that the arrest of Niyameddin Aslanzade is a warning to her husband. “Polad is given to understand that he should keep silence in prison, ‘turn a blind eye’ to violations of his rights and the rights of other convicts, and not report the information about the violations to freedom. They show him that they can easily arrest his brother on a trumped-up charge,” Gyulmira Aslanova told the “Caucasian Knot” correspondent.
