Azerbaijan withdraws peacekeepers from Afghanistan
All 120 Azerbaijani peacekeepers have been sent from Afghanistan to Turkey, from where they will return home in the near future, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) of Azerbaijan reports.
The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that peacekeepers from Azerbaijan have been participating in the NATO operation in Afghanistan since 2002. Azerbaijani analysts suggested that would hardly lead to a deepening of the country’s partnership with NATO.
The situation in Afghanistan changed dramatically after the withdrawal of the US peacekeeping contingent from the country in August. On August 15, militants of the terrorist movement “Taliban”*entered Kabul. There will no large wave of refugees from Afghanistan to Azerbaijan, suggest Togrul Djuvarly, a member of the Azerbaijan National Public Committee for European Integration, and Mekhman Aliev, the director of the “Turan” news agency.
On August 23, about 40 migrants from Afghanistan, who do not have refugee status in Azerbaijan, tried to hold a protest action in Baku. They requested the UN to pay attention to their problems. The police took the participants of the unsanctioned action out of the park.
* The Taliban is recognized as a terrorist organization and banned in Russia by the court.
