Five residents of Pankisi Gorge detained during special operation

The Georgian State Security Service (SSS) conducted a special operation in the Pankisi Gorge and detained at least five local residents, suspected of participation in a terrorist organization.

According to the Georgian SSS, three persons were detained in the village of Koreti and two in the village of Duisi. According to family members of the detainees, law enforcers did not search the houses, but seized only mobile phones of the detainees, the Georgian “First Channel” reports.

Let us remind you that earlier, several natives of the Pankisi Gorge had been sentenced for participation in the activities of terrorist organizations. So, in August 2016, it became known that David Borchashvili, a native of the Pankisi Gorge, was sentenced to 12 years of imprisonment on the charge of being a member of the “Islamic State” (IS, a terrorist organization, banned in Russia by the court, – note of the “Caucasian Knot”).

On July 11, 2016, residents of the Pankisi Gorge reported the death of Bekkhan Tokhosashvili, a 26-year-old native of the region, who fought in Syria on the side of the IS.
