Azerbaijan reports shootout in NAR direction

Azerbaijani military have suppressed the fire delivered by Armenian units on the border with the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic (NAR), the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defence (MoD) has informed. The Armenian organization "Security and Democracy" complained to international structures about deliberate arsons of fields in this border section.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that since July 14, regular armed skirmishes have been taking place on the border of the Ararat Region of Armenia and the NAR; there are losses on both sides. On August 6, Armenia and Azerbaijan exchanged accusations of shelling in this area.

The reason for the shootings that occur in the direction of Eraskh is Azerbaijan's desire to take control over the strategic road to Iran, Armenian analysts assert. In their turn, Azerbaijani experts believe that the situation on the border with the NAR is aggravated by Armenia in order to disrupt the border delimitation process.

On Saturday (August 7), units of the Armenian Armed Forces shelled the Azerbaijani positions located in the Arazdeyan-Sadarak border section of the NAR, the Azerbaijani MoD has informed. The enemy's fire was suppressed, the MoD has added.

Naira Zograbyan, an Armenian ex-MP, has complained to international human rights organizations about the violation of the rights of residents of the Ararat Region. "Shots from the Azerbaijani side are grossly violating the rights of residents of the dwelling settlement of Eraskh and adjacent settlements, while obviously deliberate arsons make agricultural works impossible," the "Sputnik Armenia" quotes Ms Zograbyan as saying.

Arman Tatoyan, the Armenian Ombudsperson has also accused Azerbaijani militaries of intentional arsons, the "Armenpress" reports.

The situation is also unsafe on another section of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. According to the Azerbaijani MoD, on August 6, Armenian militaries shelled its army positions stationed in the Sadarak and Kelbadjar Districts. In its turn, Yerevan has stated that Azerbaijani militaries shelled the positions of the Armenian troops located in the Syunik Region.
