Rights defenders ask ECtHR to award compensation to Gulli Kazanbieva

Representatives of Gulli Kazanbieva, a resident of Dagestan, have reported to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) new facts of violation of her rights, and asked to award compensation for suffered moral harm to her, the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial"* has informed.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in late January, the ECtHR urgently sent questions to the applicant and Russian authorities on Gulli Kazanbieva's state protection in connection with the imminent release of her ex-husband convicted of beating the woman.

The problem of domestic violence is relevant for Dagestan, but many local residents would not make the facts public in order not to "disgrace the republic."

Tamilla Imanova, a lawyer of the HRC "Memorial"*, and the lawyers of the European Centre for the Protection of Human Rights sent answers to the ECtHR to the questions about the case of Gulli Kazanbieva, 27, presenting the ECtHR with new facts on the case, the HRC has told today on its website. They asked the ECtHR to award compensation to Kazanbieva for her suffered moral harm in the amount of 40,000 euros.

In 2014-2018, when Gulli Kazanbieva was married to Abdurakhman Kurbanov, she was systematically subjected to bullying and beatings. In July 2019, she managed to get a divorce, but her ex-husband continued harassing the woman. On September 13, 2019, Kurbanov, having cut a mosquito net with a knife, climbed into the window of the parents' house of Gulli, where she lived then, and severely beat her up, after which she was hospitalized.

Lawyers of the HRC "Memorial"* have twice tried to secure state protection for Kazanbieva. They failed to do this at the national level.
