Dagestani resident suspected of involvement in ranks of militants in Syria

Investigators reported on the institution of a second criminal case against a resident of the Derbent District, suspected of involvement in an illegal armed formation (IAF).

A 30-year-old man is suspected of participating in the “Islamic State” (IS, a terrorist organization, banned in Russia by the court, – note of the “Caucasian Knot”) and training in terrorist activities. According to the investigators’ version, in December 2014, he illegally crossed the Syrian border, where he was trained in terrorist activities and also voluntarily joined the IS. He guarded the territories and facilities controlled by the armed formations, the Investigating Department for Dagestan of the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF) reported.

“Criminal activity was suppressed by law enforcers on January 21, 2021, at the time of his detention,” the ICRF’s Department for Dagestan reports.

The resident of Dagestan faces up to 20 years of imprisonment under one article and up to 15 years of imprisonment under the other.

The “Caucasian Knot” has also reported that in May, in Rostov-on-Don, a court found Azamat Khadjiev, a native of Dagestan, guilty of creating a terrorist community in Buynaksk, involvement in the IS, and plotting an attempt on the lives of law enforcers and sentenced him to 12 years of imprisonment. Azamat Khadjiev pleaded not guilty.
