Court sentenced Tofig Yagublu to conditional imprisonment

Tofig Yagublu, an Azerbaijani politician, has been sentenced by the Baku Court of Appeal (BCA) to a 2.5-year conditional imprisonment. His guilt was not proved; and his defence will seek his acquittal at the Supreme Court (SC), his advocate has stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that in September 2020, Tofig Yagublu was sentenced to four years and three months in prison within the case of a road accident and an attack on people. The verdict was passed amid Yagublu's hunger strike. The oppositionist stopped his protest, when the court agreed to place him under house arrest. On July 12, Yagublu was not allowed to fly to Georgia for his mother's funeral.

Azerbaijani human rights defenders announced Yagublu to be a political prisoner. Authorities of the USA, European Union (EU) and Great Britain urged to reconsider the verdict.

The freedom restraint measure in the form of house arrest has been lifted from Yagublu, but in connection with the conditional imprisonment, his foreign travels are still banned, the politician said himself.

Also on Thursday (July 15), the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) announced its decision on two Yagublu's complaints, by awarding him 9000 euros in compensation for detentions and fines imposed in 2012.
