Oppositionist Yagublu claims he banned from leaving Azerbaijan for political reasons

Tofig Yagublu, a member of the Coordination Centre for the National Council of Democratic Forces (NCDF), was banned from flying from Azerbaijan to Georgia to attend his mother’s funeral. The decision was made at the level of the country’s authorities and is biased, the oppositionist says.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that in September 2020, Tofig Yagublu was sentenced to four years and three months of imprisonment in a case on a road traffic accident and an attack on a married couple.

Tofig Yagublu, a former deputy chairman of the “Musavat” Party, was repeatedly detained and imprisoned. The human rights organization “Amnesty International” (AI) recognized him as a prisoner of conscience.

According to the oppositionist, his son is not allowed to go to Georgia either. “My son Rakhib served a year and a half in the army, participated in the Karabakh war in 2020, and was recently demobilized. However, due to the fact that his military ID does not contain a stamp to confirm he returned his service weapon, he stays on the list of persons banned from going abroad,” Tofig Yagublu said.

Oppositionist’s daughter Nigyar Khazi was not banned from leaving the country and managed to fly to Georgia.

Arif Gadjily, the leader of the “Musavat” Party, believes that “the refusal to provide sons with the opportunity to say goodbye to their parents by attending their funeral does not fit into any moral principles.” “There are no signs of a worthy political struggle in such behaviour,” Arif Gadjily emphasized.
