Family members of victims of Tu-154 plane crash near Sochi appeal to ECtHR

A complaint has been filed to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) on behalf of 70 relatives of those killed in a plane crash near Sochi. The affected people consider the closure of the criminal case and the refusal to pay compensation unreasonable, a plaintiffs’ lawyer reports today.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that in December 2018, 72 relatives of those killed in the Tu-154 plane crash filed a lawsuit to the Meschansky District Court of Moscow against the SOGAZ insurance company, a reinsurer of MS Amlin London and the 223rd Flight Detachment of the Ministry of Defence (MoD) of the Russian Federation. The plaintiffs requested an additional payment of insurance payments and compensation for material and moral damage. The amount of the claim reached 2.167 billion roubles. In April 2019, the court dismissed the claim to recover compensation from the insurers and the airline.

The Tu-154 owned by the Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD) made a flight to Syria and fell down into the sea near Sochi on December 25, 2016. All the 92 people on board perished.

Today, Igor Trunov, a lawyer of the plaintiffs, has reported filing to the ECtHR a complaint from 70 relatives of those killed in the Russian MoD’s Tu-154 plane crash in Sochi in 2016. On his Facebook page, the lawyer has noted that the complainants consider the closure of the criminal case on the plane crash unreasonable.

“None of the responsible persons have been brought to justice. The reasons for the deaths have not been established. For three years, relatives and friends of the victims have sought justice in Russian courts in vain. Now, the case will be considered by the ECtHR,” the “Interfax” quotes Igor Trunov as emphasizing.
