Wife of journalist Afghan Sadygov reports her husband's grave health condition

The Supreme Court (SC) of Azerbaijan has appointed the consideration of the complaint lodged by the journalist, Afghan Sadygov, for July 2. The journalist is on hunger strike for 227 days and is in grave condition; he may not live to see the trial, his wife Sevindj Sadygova fears. She intends to seek asylum for her family abroad.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on November 3, 2020, Afghan Sadygov, the editor-in-chief of the "Azel.tv", was sentenced to seven years in prison within an extortion case. He announced a protest hunger strike and has been continuing it since November 3, 2020. On January 28, 2021, the court reduced Sadygov's prison term to six years.

"Afghan's body organs are failing, but we are not even given a medical conclusion on his health condition," Sevindj Sadygova has complained.

Elchin Sadygov, an advocate, said that at the SC, the defence will insist on Sadygov's acquittal.

"Given his health condition, his punishment can be mitigated and the real prison term replaced with another freedom restriction measure not related to imprisonment," the advocate has stated.
