Art critics find it logical to include Chechen and Adyg painters into Forbes Rating

The inclusion of painters, Aslan Goisum from Chechnya and Vova Perkin from Adygea, into the top 10 young painters of the Russian Forbes Magazine is natural, because their works are in demand by the public, the art critics interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot" have noted.

The Forbes Magazine has published a long list of its annual rating of the most promising Russians under 30 years of age – the "30 under 30". The category of arts includes two painters from North-Caucasian regions, namely: Aslan Goisum from Chechnya and Vova Perkin from Adygea.

Milena Orlova, the editor-in-chief of "The Art Newspaper Russia" magazine, has confirmed to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that Aslan Goisum has long been "a star in our artistic horizon." In the list of 50 most promising Russian painters compiled in the fall of 2020 by her magazine Goisum took the third place.

Elena Ischenko, the chief curator of the "Typography" Centre for Contemporary Art and a co-founder of the "aroundart.org", an independent magazine about contemporary art in Russia, has noted that the placement of these two painters on the Forbes list speaks of their fame and value in the public arena.

"I can say that for Vova [Perkin], same as the painter from Chechnya, Aslan Goisum, who has recently returned to the non-Russified spelling of his surname, the topic of their works is very, very important – the deportation of Chechens in 1944, the current state policy on the deportation, and the difficulties of repatriation. All these topics are not just the history of his people – it's his personal history and the history of his family," Ms Ischenko told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
