Film about Dagestani islanders wins Canadian festival

The jury of the "Hot Docs" International Festival has found the film about the Chechen Island in Makhachkala to be the best full-length documentary. "Ostrov – Lost Island" tells about the life of people forgotten by the authorities and forced to engage in poaching.

The prize was awarded to the film "Ostrov – Lost Island", the Dagestan edition "Novoe Delo" has reported. The film was also chosen for the main contest of the "Visions du Réel" Film Festival in Switzerland.

The film was produced by the "Doklad" Swiss film company; it was created and directed by Svetlana Rodina and Laurent Stoop. The film tells about an island where a fishing collective farm flourished during the Soviet era.

"In this tale of love and hope amid the harsh life on the island, some residents pray for an escape, while others believe that Putin will restore Russia's greatness and save the lost island," the annotation to the documentary says.
