Tagir Galaev sentenced in case on Magas rally

The Zheleznovodsk City Court recognized Tagir Galaev as a participant of an attack on law enforcers in the course of a rally in Magas and sentenced him to seven months of imprisonment. At the same time, taking into account the period of time spent by Tagir Galaev in custody, the Court pronounced a decision to release the defendant at the courtroom, the Human Rights Centre (HRC) “Memorial”* reports today.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on September 30, 2020, Tagir Galaev was detained in connection with a case on a rally in Magas. For almost a month and a half, the activist’s relatives were not aware of his whereabouts. Ingush human rights defenders found Tagir Galaev in a SIZO (pre-trial prison) in Nalchik. Tagir Galaev denies the charge of using violence against law enforcers.

On March 26, 2019, residents of Ingushetia continued a protest rally in Magas without a sanction from the authorities. On the other morning, clashes occurred between protesters and the police, while law enforcers were dispersing the rally.

The Zheleznovodsk City Court pronounced a sentence to Tagir Galaev. Judge Anna Nikityuk found him guilty of using non-dangerous violence against a public officer, the HRC “Memorial”* reports on its website today.

As an aggravating circumstance, the court noted the fact that Tagir Galaev was guided by political motives. The defendant was sentenced to seven months in a common-security penal colony. At the same time, taking into account the period of detention and house arrest, the activist was released at the courtroom, the HRC “Memorial”* reports.

Public prosecutor requested the Court to sentence Tagir Galaev to a year of imprisonment in a common-security penal colony, the HRC “Memorial”* reported.
