Friends tell about basketball player who perished in Karabakh war

The remains of Aram Mkrtchyan, a basketball player of the Armenian national team, who perished in the Karabakh war in the fall of 2020, have been buried in Stepanakert. He had volunteered for the war and perished presumably in the vicinity of Varanda, his friends have reported.

On April 5, it became known that rescuers found the remains of Aram Mkrtchyan, a basketball player of the "Artsakh" Club, who perished in Karabakh.

By April 3, the number of bodies and remains of those who perished in the territories now under Azerbaijan's control had reached 1529.

"Aram was seen wounded, but they could not take him out of the battlefield. His friends perished together with him. The fate of one guy from their group is still unknown – no one knows whether he perished or was captured," said Silva Khachatryan, a school teacher.

She remembers Aram as "a well-mannered and decent person." "He was a school's pride, an excellent basketball player, he would have had a brilliant sports future," the teacher believes.

As a member of the Armenian national team, he took part in international competitions held in Bulgaria, Portugal, Iran, Cyprus, Georgia and Turkey.

According to Ms Khachatryan, the athlete did not tell anyone that he was leaving for the war.

Andrei Sarumyan, the Mkrtchyan's coach, said that Aram started playing basketball at the age of 13; his team always won prizes at the Armenian championships.
